After the tragic death of her husband, Louise meets Fredrik. The foreigner, who chose a free lifestyle, is intriguing to a widow with a toddler son. The man is a seducer, ready for new adventures. Louise spent many years as a perfect wife and mother in a relationship, which gave her no satisfaction. Fredrik, who is not restricted by conventions, brings something utterly new to the young widow's world. The affair gives Louise an opportunity to discover and experience sexual satisfaction, but also to realize her value and her needs. Louise feels really free and she doesn't want to give this freedom up too soon. Fredrik changes as well due to their relationship. Unexpectedly, Louise becomes the most important of all women for him.
The film is above all a portrait of a relationship of two people, but at the same time, due to the supporting characters (Louise's son, mother and friend), it shows changes of customs and morality underway in Sweden itself in the 1960s: the fight for broader rights for women or liberal attitudes to sex.
Swedish-Finnish director cast Zbigniew Cybulski as the main male character. Harriet Anderrson was awarded at the International Film Festival in Venice for her performance as Louise.
